Cartel Correspondence Quill

Wondrous Item, Uncommon (requires attunement)

A black-violet quill with a faint sheen, as though dipped in twilight rather than ink. It was recovered from a known associate of the Rotfang Cartel and still carries traces of its prior use.

When held, the quill feels slightly warm, and the ink it produces seems to vanish as soon as it touches the page.

Properties

  • The quill writes in invisible ink, visible only to you and any creatures you designate at the time of writing.
  • Once per day, you may use the quill to produce an effect similar to:
    • Illusory Script, or
    • Comprehend Languages (targeting a written page).
  • While using the quill, you gain heightened insight into written magic and forgery.

Subtle Effects

When working with written material, you may find it easier to:

  • notice inconsistencies in documents
  • uncover hidden or layered messages
  • recognize magical writing styles or origins

Lingering Echo

This quill was used repeatedly in covert correspondence. At times, faint impressions surface—fragments of past messages, unfamiliar symbols, or names half-remembered.

These moments are unpredictable, but rarely meaningless.

Fold of Forewarning

Wondrous Item, Uncommon (requires attunement)

A tightly folded packet of annotated paper, covered in dense notation, crossed-out lines, and shifting marginalia. The writing appears to rearrange itself when not directly observed.

The paper feels dry and fragile, but never tears.

Properties

  • The fold holds 3 charges and regains 1d3 charges daily at dawn.
  • When a creature you can see within 30 feet makes an attack roll, saving throw, or ability check, you may use your reaction and expend 1 charge to grant them a +1d4 bonus to the roll.

Flavor

The paper rustles softly a moment before something happens— a strike, a misstep, a sudden realization.

If watched closely, the ink seems to shift just before the future arrives, as though the page is trying to decide what will happen next.

Trinket, Touched by the Seam

Unique Companion Upgrade

After its time within the Aetherspindle resonance system, Trinket is no longer quite as it was.

Its movements occasionally “double” for the briefest instant, and its eyes sometimes track something that hasn’t happened yet. When it rests, faint ticking can be heard from within its frame—out of sync with any clock.

New Traits

Seam Awareness

Trinket occasionally reacts to events just before they occur.

Once per short rest, when a creature Trinket can see within 30 feet is about to:

  • be hit by an attack, or
  • fail a saving throw

Trinket can emit a sharp chirp or sudden movement, allowing that creature to:

  • gain a +1d4 bonus to their AC against that attack, or
  • gain a +1d4 bonus to the saving throw

This must be declared after the roll is made, but before the result is resolved.

Echo Step

Trinket’s movements sometimes leave a faint afterimage.

Once per long rest, Trinket can briefly “step out of sync” with time. Until the start of its next turn:

  • attacks against Trinket are made with disadvantage
  • Trinket can move through the space of other creatures (but cannot end its turn there)

To observers, it appears as though Trinket exists in two places for a split second.

Residual Imprint

The resonance process left fragments of copied logic within Trinket.

At times, Trinket may:

  • pause and focus on empty space
  • react to unseen stimuli
  • emit unfamiliar tones or patterns

Under the right circumstances, this may reveal:

  • hidden mechanisms
  • magical disturbances
  • or echoes of past events tied to similar technology

(Your DM may prompt you when this becomes relevant.)

Flavor

Trinket is still itself—curious, loyal, and precise.

But now, sometimes, it seems to know things just a moment too early.
